Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) affect millions of people, yet they’re often misunderstood or minimized because they don’t always show structural changes on tests. The Rome Foundation exists to change that—by turning the best science into practical guidance for clinicians and hope for patients.
Who We Are
The Rome Foundation is an independent nonprofit 501(c)(3) that develops scientific evidence and educational resources to improve how FGIDs are recognized, diagnosed, and treated. Our mission is straightforward: to improve the lives of people with Functional GI Disorders.
What We Do
Since our founding, we’ve brought together leading scientists and clinicians from around the world to classify FGIDs and critically evaluate the science behind gastrointestinal function and dysfunction. This global collaboration powers clear, research-based recommendations that clinicians can use at the bedside and researchers can apply in studies—bridging the gap between discovery and day-to-day care.
How We Work
We’re committed to advancing, legitimizing, and preserving the field through science-driven, patient-centered initiatives. Our work is:
- Inclusive and collaborative — uniting experts across disciplines and countries
- Evidence-based — grounded in rigorous appraisal of the data
- Innovative and open — welcoming new ideas that move the field forward
Our Goals
- Promote clinical recognition and legitimization of FGIDs so patients are taken seriously and treated effectively
- Advance scientific understanding of the underlying mechanisms driving these conditions
- Optimize clinical management by translating evidence into practical, real-world guidance
The Bottom Line
FGIDs are real, common, and treatable. By convening global expertise and distilling the science into actionable tools, the Rome Foundation helps clinicians deliver better care—and helps patients feel seen, understood, and supported.
