There are those incidences that happen in life that are so memorable they continue to linger in one’s mind; however, such events usually leave a permanent mark in the lives of individuals and offer lessons that cannot be erased by any other experience in life. My memory event took place several years ago when, due to my curiosity, I decided to accompany my grandfather to the hospital. Due to his old age, my grandfather had begun experiencing major problems with his left eye. He had visited the hospital on many occasions to seek treatment but his condition was not getting any better. Finally, his doctor told him the only remedy left was to go for an eye operation as a way of trying to correct the abnormality with his eye. Since it was a weekend and I did not have any classes that day and did not have any other obligations, I thought it would be a good idea to accompany my grandfather to the hospital rather than stay at home and be bored. The tight relationship that had developed between my grandfather and me also made it very easy for me to accompany him, despite the fear I had of operations and hospitals in general. …

The day my grandfather died was actually the saddest day of my life. This is because as a child, I lived with my grandfather. Since I was living with him, my grandfather not only became the most important person in my life, but he was also my best friend with whom I shared my happier times and my sad times. Each time thoughts of my grandfather crossed my mind, I got a warm feeling in my heart, but all that changed the moment I received the saddest news that completely confused me; the news of my grandfather’s death. To make things worse, I did not even know that my grandfather was gravely ill because my mom and cousins had chosen not to tell me. I was sitting for my end-of-semester exams around the same time that he became ill.
I can still recall that fateful Thursday morning when my cousin arrived at the college’s residential hall where I was staying. He did not actually tell me what was happening, but from his hesitant voice, I could tell that something was terribly wrong. About an hour later, my mother also came, and it was she who clearly told me that my grandfather had actually passed away. Even though my mother told me the sad news with a soothing tone, I still did not believe her. I asked them to accompany me to my grandfather’s home. The one hour journey to my grandfather’s house felt like an eternity. I kept wishing my mother would drive faster and faster towards my grandfather’s house. As we headed towards his home, the memories of the many happy moments we spent together kept crossing my mind and as the thoughts kept coming, I could not help but to feel some intense sadness as tears freely rolled down my cheeks. It is only when I got to my grandfather’s house and realized that he was neither there to welcome us nor was he anywhere in the house that it truly hit me that my grandfather was indeed dead. Death had robbed me of a true friend….
The atmosphere was simply breathtaking: the sun was shining brightly over the calm suburbs. Being a few minutes past midday, most people were indoors, most probably taking their lunch or afternoon naps. In his room, Kevin sat on the bed, glum and heartbroken. His room was all messed up, with fashion magazines littered all over the carpeted floor. On one corner, there lay empty tins of hair gel and perfume bottles. The sight of these immediately brought back memories of Anne, the girl Kevin had loved with all his heart.
His memories were jolted back to the time they first met. It was during a high school dance, and amidst all the other girls in attendance, Anne simply stood out. Her blue eyes were the most beautiful Kevin had ever seen. Her charm was amplified by the curly hair that was neatly tucked in a high, bouncy ponytail. Tall and slender, Anne had lovely dimples that any man would have given up anything for. With that first glimpse of her, Kevin was rendered speechless. Instead of approaching her and declaring his immediate thoughts and feelings, he simply shook her hand and walked away. He could not find the right words to describe his emotions at the time. Thankfully, he managed to get her number from a schoolmate; three days later, he called and expressed his interest in seeing her….
